The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Bruno A. Daugela (ASN: 16070281), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 12 June 1944, near ****, France. The unit of which Private First Class Daugela was a member, was attacked by a numerically superior enemy. Private First Class Daugela remained as a part of the force covering his unit’s disengagement, and the displacement of his light machine gun squad. His devotion to duty and tenacity in holding his position were instrumental in a successful withdrawal. When his ammunition was exhausted and his post overrun by the enemy, Private First Class Daugela pulled the pin of a Gammon Grenade and at only arms length dropped it over a hedgerow. The subsequent explosion killed two enemy, injured others, blew out part of the hedgerow and dazed Private First Class Daugela. Upon regaining consciousness, he made his way through the enemy and succeeded in rejoining his squad. Private First Class Daugela was subsequently killed near ****, France. His conduct was exemplary and reflected great credit upon himself, his unit, and the military service.
