The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John G. Darling (ASN: 0-1288364), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 3d Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 14 June 1944, near ****, France. In leading his platoon against the Germans under heavy enemy fire, Second Lieutenant Darling did an outstanding job in coordinating its action in securing their objective. His unit was in support when the adjacent unit failed to move forward and the company was temporarily held up by machine gun fire from a group of houses on the left flank. He established a base of fire and personally took a select group of eight men to assault the three buildings. On approaching the first building his group was fired on by a machine gun and four riflemen. Second Lieutenant Darling told his men to cover him. Pulling the pins on two grenades, he rushed the building and even though wounded by their fire continued to advance until within grenade range where he scored a direct hit on the enemy through a window. He then signaled his group forward and cleared the enemy from the two remaining buildings. The actions of Second Lieutenant Darling reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
