The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Louis P. Damore (ASN: 31004642), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 27 September 1944, near ****, Holland. Private First Class Damore, BAR gunner, when his platoon was attacked by a superior enemy force, voluntarily and without orders covered with his BAR the withdrawal of a section which was pinned down by intense fire. Despite enemy mortar and machine gun fire directed at him, Private First Class Damore delivered such a volume of well aimed fire that enemy infantrymen broke off their attack and sought cover in a nearby building. By his heroic conduct and quick thinking, Private First Class Damore almost single-handedly repulsed an enemy attack, saved his section from heavy casualties and enabled the platoon to subsequently capture its objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
