The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class James D. Crisp (ASN: 33646970), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 194th Glider Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division, in action against the enemy on 7 January 1945. Private First Class Crisp, while under heavy enemy sniper, artillery, and small arms fire, crawled into a position with his bazooka. A few seconds later it was knocked from his hands by enemy machine gun fire. Realizing the need for bazooka fire on a tank that was holding up the advance of his company, he crawled back and borrowed a weapon from a bazooka man of another squad. While still under heavy enemy fire, Private First Class Crisp returned to a position approximately 50 yards from the approaching armor. Upon firing and thus disclosing his position, the enemy tank concentrated its entire fire power on him. His action stopped the enemy short of its objective, thereby giving his company more time to prepare for a tank attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
