The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Donald C. Coppersmith (ASN: 36224913), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 5 July 1944, near ****, France. When a full machine gun crew was wiped out and its sector was heavily threatened by enemy penetration, Private Coppersmith voluntarily dashed 150 yards across open terrain and placed the inactive weapon into action when the enemy was within 75 yards of the gun. His prompt and courageous action accounted for many enemy killed and restored the forward defense line. Private Coppersmith was severely wounded during the engagement and died a few days later. His conduct reflects the high traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
