The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Woots Chaffins (ASN: 35134733), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 3d Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 23 December 1944, near *****, Belgium. Sergeant Chaffins defended a vital outpost with his squad against a determined and prolonged assault by an overwhelmingly superior enemy force. By his tenacity and the example of his own courage he encouraged the men to hold off all attacks until the entire squad, with the exception of one other man and himself, had become casualties. Sergeant Chaffins did not move from this outpost until directly ordered to do so by his Company Commander. Sergeant Chaffins’ stubborn, unyielding defense of this position aided materially in accomplishing the company mission of defending the town. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
