The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles A. Burton (ASN: 37282629), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 6 April 1945, at *****, Germany. Private First Class Burton, a Company Runner, while delivering an urgent message through a heavy artillery barrage and exposed to sniper fire, captured three enemy who attempted to ambush him. Later an enemy tank and about thirty infantrymen offered a threat to the company command post. Private First Class Burton assisted in repelling this threat, killing three enemy with his rifle and temporarily stopping the tank with a Gammon Grenade. He was seriously wounded in this action. Private First Class Burton’s courage and enthusiasm even after he was wounded were in keeping with the highest standards of the Armed Forces of the United States.
