The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Robert E. Burman (ASN: 20200374), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 3d Battalion, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 14 June 1944, near ****, France. Staff Sergeant Burman, Platoon Sergeant, led a group of ten picked men on a mission to clear some houses of snipers and machine gunners. He advanced through heavy enemy crossfire from the opposite side of the road and personally rushed the first house from a nearby hedgerow, firing steadily with his BAR. This action drove the enemy from the windows and enabled his men to close in. Upon entering he threw two grenades which killed three snipers on the ground floor. Climbing the stairs, he met and killed two more of the enemy blocking his way. Leaving two of his men behind to search further, Staff Sergeant Burman continued on to the next building, where he was severely wounded but continued on his mission and succeeded in cleaning up the remaining buildings and adjacent area. His great courage was an inspiration to all of his men and hastened the advance toward ****, France. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
