The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Michael R. Joseph, United States Army, for heroism above and beyond the call of duty on 14 August 2011 as a Technical Inspector assigned to Company F, 1st Battalion, 160th Specialist Operations Regiment (Airborne). Staff Sergeant Joseph was driving with his family when he observed a head-on collision between two vehicles. He immediately started to provide assistance to the occupant trapped inside. Staff Sergeant Joseph treated the driver’s severe facial injuries that extended in a vertical line from the driver’s hairline down past his mouth on the right side of his face. With no access to appropriate personal protection equipment and despite the risk of exposure to the driver’s blood, Staff Sergeant Joseph used a cloth on scene to address the facial wound that was bleeding heavily and then assessed the driver’s other injuries. Staff Sergeant Joseph’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, this Command and the United States Army.
