The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant [then Private First Class] James E. Bryant (ASN: 33628181), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 24 December 1944, near ****, Belgium. When his company ran low on ammunition while defending a vital crossroads, First Sergeant Bryant went back for a re-supply over the single open road. An enemy machine gun commanding this road opened fire on the jeep, killing the driver and one occupant. First Sergeant Bryant secured as much ammunition as he could carry and returned to the surrounded company, then led a patrol which forced the enemy machine gun to withdraw. The courage, initiative and devotion to duty exemplified in the conduct of First Sergeant Bryant enabled his company to secure ammunition to hold its position eight hours longer and was a material contribution to the success of the action. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
