Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 95 (June 23, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Herbert W. Brown (ASN: 39397376), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 30 April 1945, near ****, Germany. Staff Sergeant Brown, Squad Leader, volunteered to lead a three man patrol with the mission of flanking a 20-mm. gun position which had a platoon pinned down. The patrol advanced across open terrain and drew heavy enemy fire which killed one man and wounded another. Staff Sergeant Brown, with great aggressiveness, continued forward and delivered such effective fire with his M-1 that three of the enemy gun crew were killed and the remaining two came out under a white flag. Staff Sergeant Brown’s courageous conduct reflects great credit upon the Airborne Forces of the United States.
