Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 60 (November 30, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Clarence Blake (ASN: 36326657), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 3d Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against the enemy on 3 October 1944 near ****, Holland. First Sergeant Blake moved forward with the 1st Platoon to reinforce Company E which was being counter-attacked. By his calm unexcitable manner, First Sergeant Blake inspired this platoon to move forward in spite of heavy flanking fire and very heavy shelling. The platoon was greatly depleted by First Sergeant Blake sent the platoon forward, and with two men attacked an enemy machine gun nest on the flank. The two men became casualties but First Sergeant Blake single-handed wiped out this machine gun nest with hand grenades. In this action he was wounded by artillery fire. His inspiring leadership, heroic devotion to duty and utter disregard for personal safety were prime factors in moving his platoon forward rapidly and aiding in ultimately frustrating the enemy attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
