Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 122 (October 5, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Edmund R. Bilby (ASN: 37143275), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action against the enemy on the morning of 18 December 1943, at ****, Italy. During a severe counterattack by a superior enemy force, Staff Sergeant Bilby’s platoon leader and platoon sergeant were wounded and evacuated. He took command of the platoon and successfully directed its defense, inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. Staff Sergeant Bilby then formed an assault team and launched an attack against the enemy’s positions, bravely exposing himself to direct the platoon’s movement and fire. This sudden attack caught the Germans by surprise, compelling them to retreat from their positions. Quickly, Staff Sergeant Bilby consolidated his force and organized effective defenses against enemy counterattacks. Staff Sergeant Bilby’s great courage, initiative, ability and complete disregard for his own personal safety were instrumental in securing and holding the high ground. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
