The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Richard J. Bieterman (ASN: 0-199778), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 3 January 1945, near ****, Belgium. When the leading platoon of his company was pinned down by rifle and automatic weapons fire, First Lieutenant Bieterman promptly sprang to his feet spraying the enemy with his sub-machine gun and called his men to follow. By his personal example and forceful leadership he caused hi men to get to their feet and flush out the enemy from well dug in positions. First Lieutenant Bieterman continued his audacious leadership against each point of enemy resistance until he was wounded and returned to the aid station upon order of his company commander. On his way to the aid station he received additional serious wounds. His courage and gallantry were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army.
