The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Carl E. Bennett (ASN: 14112606), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 401st Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 6 June 1944, near ****, France. Private First Class Bennett was a member of a patrol operating in security of a glider landing zone. While en route to rescue a crashed glider, the patrol encountered a platoon of Germans who attacked and caused casualties in the patrol. Private First Class Bennett picked up the BAR of the wounded gunner and against the full force of the enemy fire charged the Germans and utterly disorganized them by his audacity and fire. His action drew their fire and enabled the glider occupants to reach cover and assist in the defeat of the enemy force. Private First Class Bennett was killed in a later action. Throughout the operation he had shown constant heroism, calmness under fire and unflinching devotion to duty typifying the high traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
