The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Paul P. Balena (ASN: 33365838), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 3 January 1945, near *****, Belgium. Corporal Balena, voluntarily and at great risk to his personal safety, administered first aid to four men who were seriously wounded as a result of the severe enemy artillery concentration. Corporal Balena, disregarding the enemy observation and artillery fire, at a time when adequate medical personnel was lacking, aided in the hasty evacuation of the wounded, thus enabling the medical aid men to care for the other casualties. By his gallant action he set an example of courage and devotion to duty which was an inspiration to his comrades and aided in the quick reorganization of his platoon. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
