The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Ervin P. Augustine (ASN: 36884393), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 20 December 1944, near ****, Belgium. Private Augustine, Assistant Machine Gunner, was in a position protecting a road block when three enemy vehicles approached. A half track and two tanks opened fire wounding Private Augustine with the first shell. He continued firing his gun until it had been rendered useless by enemy fire, and aided in knocking out the enemy half track and killing or wounding over twenty Germans. By his gallant action, Private Augustine inspired the other members of the road block to remain at their posts until ordered to withdraw, thereby contributing greatly to the successful repulse of the enemy assault. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
