The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Medical Corps) Leo U. Zambon (ASN: 0-531706), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Chemical Battalion (Motorized), XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 25 December 1944, in Luxembourg. Captain Zambon sent to the aid of severely wounded men in a burning ambulance which had been strafed and wrecked by an enemy plane while the plane was still strafing in the immediate vicinity. The ambulance was ablaze and there was danger of explosion. Small arms ammunition carried by the men was being set off by the flames. Captain Zambon arrived at the scene immediately after the strafing. With assistance, he removed the wounded from the burning ambulance and his cool, efficient and courageous conduct and complete disregard for his personal safety was responsible for saving the lives of several severely wounded men. The courage and utter disregard for personal safety reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
