The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fourth Grade Robert Fuchs (ASN: 32072213), United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action on 7 January 1945, in Luxembourg. Technician Fourth Grade Fuchs distinguished himself by his heroic action when, at great risk of life, he aided in the rescue of two soldiers who were pinned at the legs beneath an overturned 3/4 ton weapons carrier in the Alizette River. Technician Fourth Grade Fuchs appeared a few minutes after the truck had careened off the road. Sergeant Jens C. Christiansen and Private First Class Willie C. Serensen, were wedged almost helplessly against the river’s bed, holding their bodies upright by clinging with their last remaining strength to the body of the truck. Technician Fourth Grade Fuchs waded into the icy water, where for 30 minutes, he assisted the hapless victims by holding their heads above the frigid water to permit breathing and by moving their limbs and torsos to relieve pain and shock. Technician Fourth Grade Fuchs’ personal endurance and hardship in saving the lives reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
