The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Wendell S. Young (ASN: 34602334), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 2d Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 31 March 1945 and 1 April 1945, in Germany. On these dates Sergeant Young’s platoon encountered heavy resistance from the enemy. He courageously exposed himself to the enemy fire when it was necessary to secure better positions for his men and to secure aid. On one occasion he travelled from a position where one soldier had been wounded to the main body of the platoon under heavy enemy fire to direct fire against the enemy and to lead support forward. His personal courage played a large part in the killing of an estimated hundred enemy and capture of more than two hundred and fifty prisoners in the two-day period. His daring and heroism sets him forth as an outstanding non-commissioned officer and is in accord withy the highest standards of the military service.
