The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Milton C. Worley (ASN: 0-1184971), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 945th Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 4 May 1945, in Austria. When enemy guns bean shelling his battery position, Lieutenant Worley immediately left his foxhole to help the casualties who had been seriously wounded by the first volley. Disregarding the shells which were hitting around him, Lieutenant Worley directed the evacuation of the wounded to a safer place. Lieutenant Worley and an aid man searched the entire area under fire for other wounded personnel. By his prompt and valorous action, several men were removed to a protected position, thereby preventing further possible injury. Lieutenant Worley’s deed reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
