The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Chemical Warfare Service) Joshua L. Woodward, Jr. (ASN: 0-1035186), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 3d Chemical Battalion (Motorized), III Corps, in action against the enemy on 6 December 1944, near *****, France. Lieutenant Woodward, with his radio operator, reported to an infantry command post to direct mortar support during a fierce enemy attack. He fearlessly drove two thousand yards under intense artillery fire. When stopped by a road block, he raced heroically on foot across eight hundred yards of open ground covered by heavy shell fire. Reaching his objective, he promptly directed accurate mortar fire. His conspicuous gallantry, aggressiveness, and disregard for personal danger exemplify the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
