The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Kenneth W. Winterle (ASN: 36898309), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy from 8 to 12 February 1945, in Luxembourg. Technician Fifth Grade Winterle, Company Armorer, volunteered on 8 February 1945 to go on a hazardous reconnaissance party for a bridge site in the vicinity of Echternach. Later that night he volunteered to act as runner for the next two days carrying messages from the bridge sit to the Command Post under very heavy enemy fire. On 12 February 1945 he volunteered to repair and maintain a vital communication line which at the time was under intense enemy artillery fire. The heroism displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Winterle in repeatedly volunteering for missions above and beyond the call of duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
