The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal James Weir (ASN: 31335131), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 8 February 1945, in Luxembourg. While crossing the Sauer River in assault boats under heavy enemy fire, Corporal Weir stayed on the far shore of the river and for ten hours, thus exposed himself to intense enemy fire. Many of he boats were out of control due to the swift current, and others, having been riddled with enemy automatic weapons fire, were sinking rapidly. Corporal Weir evacuated the wounded men from one of these boats and administered first aid to the men. His dauntless courage and supreme devotion to duty inspired the officers and men to greater achievement, saving many boats and personnel, and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
