The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert C. Weed (ASN: 0-466422), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the ** Infantry Regiment, XX Corps, in action against the enemy. On ** February 1943, at ******, Second Lieutenant Weed, after another platoon of his company had been driven out of position by enemy fire, received permission from his company commander to lead a group of volunteers to retake the position. Despite heavy machine gun and rifle fire, he, accompanied by five volunteers, succeeded in driving out a 10-man hostile enemy patrol. He personally killed two. His companions wounded and killed several others. Later, due to the overwhelming enemy reinforcements, Second Lieutenant Weed withdrew his group. Despite heavy enemy fire he managed to cut an enemy telephone line. The action of Second Lieutenant Weed is an inspiring example of courage, initiative, and leadership, and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
