(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major (Field Artillery) Thomas James Webster (ASN: 0-21831), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Artillery Section, FIFTH U.S. Army, in action against the enemy Italy, in September 1943. When it became necessary to ascertain the strength and enemy positions in a certain hamlet, Major Webster crawled on the ground across no man’s land and into enemy territory, from time to time exposing himself to draw their fire. Then he crawled back to his own life with his right coat sleeve torn away from enemy fire, but with the information that the artillery needed in order to continue their campaign. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Webster, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
