The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John S. Webster, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Aidman with the FIFTH Army near Venafro, Italy, during World War II. The company to which he was assigned was assaulting German positions at Mount Cruse and he accompanied the unit throughout the attack. While the American were consolidating newly-won ground, Corporal Webster rendered medical attention to wounded and dying men, while under intense enemy artillery, machine gun and small arms fire. His prompt aid saved the lives of many of his comrades. Despite the terrible battle which was raging, Corporal Webster continued to treat casualties until all men in need of aid had been attended. His courage and consideration for the welfare of his comrades upheld the highest standards of the medical corps.
