The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George L. Warner (ASN: 34687417), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 29 April 1945, at Garching, Germany. An attacking force, consisting of tanks with infantry support, was sent against the town of Garching, Germany. Approaching the town, they were subjected to heavy enemy mortar and artillery fire forcing the tanks to button-up. Private First Class Warner, without hesitation, leaped onto a tank exposing himself to the full view of the enemy and brought the tank’s .50 caliber machine gun into action. In the fight that followed, he knocked out two of the enemy machine guns and forced the other supporting enemy guns into silence. Later, in the town, Private First Class Warner accounted for another enemy machine gun position. By his great courage, this soldier helped in enabling his company to move into a position from where they inflicted heavy losses on the enemy and effected a break-through of the enemy’s well-fortified positions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
