Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 2 (January 6, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant David F. Walsh (ASN: 32759665), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 28 November 1944, in France. Sergeant Walsh was in command of a five-man outpost that intercepted a strong enemy patrol. Because of the terrain features and poor light the enemy was able to direct a withering fire upon the outpost and pin it down. Sergeant Walsh, cognizant of the increasing seriousness of the situation, armed himself with a BAR and disregarding his personal safety proceeded to work around to the flank of the enemy. Reaching an advantageous position he opened fire on the enemy and drew diverting fire in exchange. This maneuver permitted the outpost to man their machine gun and in the ensuing fire fight the attack was repulsed with several enemy killed and the remainder put to rout. The complete success of the episode was due solely to the outstanding leadership of Sergeant Walsh, who through his courage, daring, and resourcefulness, so inspired his small squad to overcome overwhelming odds. The courage, leadership, and resourcefulness of Sergeant Walsh reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
