The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Hideo Uyesaka (ASN: 39169069), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 442d Regimental Combat Team, in action against the enemy on 22 October 1944, in France. When two riflemen of Company L were seriously wounded by enemy machine gun fire, Private Uyesaka, with utter disregard for his personal safety, proceeded under enemy machine gun fire to their aid. While crawling to the nearest of the wounded he was hit in the left foot by enemy fire. Despite his painful wound he continued forward and, upon reaching the wounded soldier hurriedly brought him to a point of safety where he administered first aid. After he had treated the patient, he crawled ten yards to aid the second man and again administered first aid. While dressing the wound of the second patient, the enemy machine gun nest was neutralized by the forward elements. Observing that the area was now comparatively safe, Private Uyesaka called his litter squad and did not permit himself to be evacuated until the two patients had been safely removed to the rear. By his courage, initiative and devotion to duty, Private Uyesaka reflects credit upon himself and the United States Army.
