The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) John L. Tucker (ASN: 0-1169771), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 179th Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 25 January 1945, in Luxembourg. While setting up a forward Command Post, Captain Tucker heard an explosion in the immediate area, and upon investigation, found a soldier who had driven his vehicle over a mine and whose assistant driver had been injured and had crawled into a mine field. In the darkness, it was very difficult to locate the injured man. Disregarding his own personal safety, Captain Tucker proceeded into the field for 50 yards before locating the wounded man, only to find him dead. Captain Tucker and a sergeant from his unit placed the man on a stretcher and carried him out of the field. The utter disregard for his personal safety displayed by Captain Tucker in going to the aid of a wounded enlisted man in the mined area when other mines could reasonably be expected to be encountered, reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
