The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James W. Travis (ASN: 36762117), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a Medical Aidman of Company B, *** Chemical Battalion (Motorized), XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 18 January 1945, in Luxembourg. The 2d platoon of Company B, *** Chemical Battalion (Motorized), in the vicinity of ***, Luxembourg, was subjected to a heavy barrage of enemy artillery and mortar fire which lasted for about an hour. Air bursts sprayed the gun pits with shrapnel, wounding several men. Private First Class Travis left his place of safety, on his own volition, left his fox hole and dashed across 100 yards of ground which was being heavily shelled and rendered first aid to the wounded men. When he had administered first aid to all of the wounded men he assisted in their evacuation out of the danger zone. The courage and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Private First Class Travis reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Medical Department of the United States Army.
