Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 7 (January 26, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Warden F. Thrall (ASN: 34249287), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 2 September 1944, in France. In the vicinity of Lorient, France, the 1/4-ton vehicle, in which he and Lieutenant Perfetti were riding, was knocked out by a German anti-tank gun. Lieutenant Perfetti was wounded four times by rifle and machine gun fire. Technician Fifth Grade Thrall rendered first aid and then assisted this officer in crawling and walking back to the American lines, a distance of approximately one mile. This distance, traversed as it was through enemy area, was covered safely only because of Technician Fifth Grade Thrall’s fearlessness in scouting forward and being constantly on the alert for danger. All through this journey Technician Fifth Grade Thrall showed no indication of fear or thought of his own safety. Technician Fifth Grade Thrall’s utter disregard for his own personal safety, his high devotion to duty, reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
