The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Cavalry) Russell B. Thompson (ASN: 0-1030845), United States Army, for gallantry In action while serving with Troop B, 28th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), III Corps, in action against the enemy on the night of 29 December 1944. The 3d Reconnaissance Platoon, Troop B, commanded by First Lieutenant Thompson, participated in the dismounted attack on *****, Luxembourg. Twice Lieutenant Thompson brilliantly led his small force into the center of the town from the west, and twice he was compelled to withdraw by enemy tank and automatic weapons fire. Learning that our force on the east was pinned down by enemy fire, Lieutenant Thompson fearlessly attacked a third time in a diversionary action which successfully relieved enemy pressure from the other units engaged, and also rescued eight men of his platoon who were cut off during the previous withdrawal from the town. His bold action and sound tactical judgment enabled the reconnaissance force, of which he was a part, to seize high ground commanding the town and properly inform elements of the division which relieved it as to the strength and disposition of the enemy. Lieutenant Thompson’s display of the highest degree of combat efficiency and inspirational leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
