The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Hiroshi Tadakuma (ASN: 37345368), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 442d Regimental Combat Team, in action against the enemy on 31 October and 1 November 1944 in France, while temporarily in charge of the communications platoon. When the communication line was disrupted by a direct hit by enemy artillery, Technician Fourth Grade Tadakuma fearlessly left his covered position and went forward for a distance of 300 yards to locate the break in the line. While he was repairing the damage, an enemy artillery shell landed 10 yards away, wounding his leg. Ignoring his injury, which needed medical attention, he voluntarily remained on duty until the necessary repairs were made. The following day while repairing the line under similar circumstances he was again hit and though severely injured completed the repair with the help of a rifleman before being evacuated to the rear. By his courage, initiative, and devotion to duty, Technician Fourth Grade Tadakuma reflects much credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
