The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward I. Swindell (ASN: 37208726), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AW) Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 4 December 1944. On that date, near Cappel, France, Battery B, *** Field Artillery Battalion was being shelled by enemy artillery fire which resulted in a number of serious casualties. Private First Class Swindell voluntarily and without regarded for his own personal safety, while under enemy artillery fire, ably and efficiently assisted in removing five injured men to the Battalion Aid Station, thereby enabling the regular gun crew to carry on an uninterrupted fire mission. He exerted every effort to alleviate the pain of the wounded and his cooperation succeeded in dispatching these men to the Aid Station at the earliest possible moment and in so doing afforded the injured men immediate medical aid. The courage and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Private First Class Swindell reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
