The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class William James Byrd (ASN: RA-13464776), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Sergeant First Class Byrd distinguished himself by heroic actions on 25 August 1968, while serving with the 25th Military Police Company, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Byrd was in command of the Military Police Unit escorting a convoy traveling from Cu Chi to Tay Ninh, when it came under intense enemy fire. Sergeant Byrd fearlessly exposed himself to the withering enemy fire as he remained in his unprotected vehicle and directed the MEDIVAC helicopters to their desired location. He continued to expose himself to the fierce enemy shelling as he ran from vehicle to vehicle directing the friendly forces’ suppressive fire and administering aid to the wounded. Although enemy fire was still very heavy, Sergeant Byrd, with complete disregard for his personal safety, led the endangered convoy to a secure base camp. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Sergeant Byrd’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
