(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Private Clyde T. Stokes, United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action while serving with the ** Tank Destroyer Battalion at Salerno, Italy, on 13 September 1943. At the junction of the Calore River and F. La Cosa Creek, Italy, Private Stokes, assistant gunner in a tank destroyer, moved with it to a position under direct fire of enemy artillery and small arms, in the face of five enemy tanks. From that position Private Stokes assisted in the destruction of five enemy tanks and one ammunition vehicle, going about his duties in a clear, deliberate manner in spite of the heavy fire to which he was subjected. The destruction of these tanks removed a grave menace to our troops in that sector end and Private Stokes’ action reflects the best traditions of the Army of the United States
