Lieutenant Colonel Stella’s duties as liaison officer and G-3 observer necessitated his going ashore with assault forces on D-Day, thereby exposing himself to enemy aerial attacks and mortar and small arms fire. His suggestions were extremely valuable in planning and conducting the Legaspi operation on Luzon, Philippine Islands. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Stella, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
