The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Leo G. Spinner (ASN: 0-517236), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 10 February 1945, near Weilerbach, Germany. Lieutenant Spinner led his platoon in ferrying Infantry across the Sauer River at a site near Weilerbach, Germany. The area was pounded ceaselessly by enemy artillery and mortar fire. Lieutenant Spinner moved fearlessly about the site, efficiently directing operations of boat crews, and was exposed to enemy fire during the entire operation. By his bravery and gallant leadership, Lieutenant Spinner inspired his men to work for 17 continuous hours and thereby transport many troops and supplies into the bridgehead. The actions of Lieutenant Spinner reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
