The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Hubert W. Smith (ASN: 36869343), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Troop C, 32d Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), in action against the enemy on 4 November 1944. Technician Fifth Grade Smith, on his own initiative volunteered to accompany, unarmed and without a brassard, four other men to render possible aid to the crew of a disabled tank near *****, Luxembourg, which friendly forces had not yet occupied. Upon arrival at the tank, after crossing 1,2000 yards of open terrain under heavy enemy mortar fire and known observation, he found two of the tankmen were wounded seriously, and the third had been killed instantly. He immediately assisted in administering first aid and in the prompt evacuation of the casualties. Technician Fifth Grade Smith’s loyal devotion to duty and gallant action reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
