    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Joseph P. Simon (ASN: 39158688), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the ** Infantry Regiment, XX Corps, in action against the enemy. On *8 February 1943, at ******, Sergeant Simon was one of a group of six who volunteered for the task of scouting the enemy and re-taking a position lost by a platoon. Despite heavy enemy machine gun and rifle fire, Sergeant Simon energetically proceeded with this group which killed several of the enemy and retook the position. The courage and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Simon is meritorious and deserving of emulation. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Simon, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
