The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Marvin A. Bichel (ASN: 0-1180421), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with XIII Corps, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 6 April 1945. While leading a reconnaissance party, Lieutenant Bichel was ambushed twice by enemy patrols, but continued to go forward by organizing his available fire power. When last engaged by the enemy in platoon strength, he took position in a house and defended it from room to room until forced to surrender. With great coolness, he outwitted his guard and influenced him to surrender to the American forces, and then led the way back through enemy lines to safety. His outstanding courage, aggressiveness and inspiring leadership reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
