The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) David T. Shrewsbury (ASN: 0-373678), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 15 March 1944. When the original leader was killed, First Lieutenant Shrewsbury assumed command of a counterattack against enemy forces which were strongly entrenched in overrun positions. Continually exposing himself to heavy enemy fire, he directed his men so effectively that the numerically superior forces were denied further penetration. Although severely wounded early in the engagement, he continued his aggressive leadership and refused evacuation until the enemy had been cleared from the area. First Lieutenant Shrewsbury’s courage and determination inspired his men to heroic achievement, and exemplify the highest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
