The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Edward J. Sheehey (ASN: 31369290), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 20 February 1945, in Germany. Technician Fifth Grade Sheehey, while a volunteer member of a wire-laying crew in an attack on Wincheringen, Germany, was checking a communication line when two of his comrades were hit by mortar fire. Technician Fifth Grade Sheehey injured his knee while seeking cover, but nevertheless crawled approximately a half-mile under continuous mortar and artillery fire to obtain aid. He then led the way back to the wounded men and assisted in the evacuation of the one man still alive. His courage and devotion to his fellow soldier despite personal injury and exposure to heavy fire is in accord with the highest standards of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the Military Service of the United States.
