The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal John L. Sellers (ASN: 33081164), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 176th Field Artillery Battalion, III Corps. On 15 December 1944, Corporal Sellers was on duty as a battery Aid Man with Battery C. When the first round of an enemy artillery concentration injured one of the cooks in the battery kitchen truck, Corporal Sellers, without regard for his own personal safety, voluntarily rushed to the aid of his comrade-in-arms despite the continued intense enemy shelling. While in the act of climbing into the kitchen truck Corporal Sellers was mortally wounded by fragments of a shell which burst nearby, and he died a few minutes thereafter. The self-sacrifice and supreme devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Sellers, and which inspired him to lay down his life in an attempt to save that of another, reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
