The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Victor W. Sander (ASN: 36726265), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 2d Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized) (Separate), in support of the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 31 March 1945 in Germany. Staff Sergeant Sander’s platoon engaged the enemy in an intense fire fight, the enemy fighting fanatically from dug in positions. Staff Sergeant Sander exposed himself repeatedly to enemy fire to secure the positions of his scattered force. He rose up in the turret of his armored car and neutralized a strong enemy position with his anti-aircraft machine gun that was holding back supporting forces, but in so doing exposed himself to fire from another position that killed him instantly. Staff Sergeant Sander’s outstanding heroism and courageous devotion to duty led to the rout of the enemy and reflects the highest credit on his character as a non-commissioned officer and upon the military service.
