The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Harold G. Bryan (ASN: 37508150), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 16 February 1945, in Luxembourg. During an intense enemy shelling, Corporal Bryan observed Captain AufderHeide, Medical Officer, in a nearby field, enter a vehicle driven by First Sergeant Farmer. The vehicle proceeded approximately ten yards and struck a mine. Corporal Bryan ran across the field as shells continued to fall and removed Captain AufderHeide, who was seriously injured, from under the vehicle and rendered first aid. He then helped put the wounded officer on a stretcher and helped carry him to a medical vehicle./ He then proceeded with the aid truck and driver to the aid station. Corporal Bryan’s utter disregard for his own personal safety to rescue a wounded comrade while under enemy artillery fire reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
