The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Perry O. Russell (ASN: 39375095), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 133d Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 8 February 1945, in Luxembourg. Corporal Russell repeatedly exposed himself to concentrated enemy fire during assault crossing operations of the Sauer River east of Berdorf, Luxembourg. Through his aggressive actions both his squad sergeant and company commander were evacuated under fire after they had been seriously wounded. In addition to five successful river crossings under fire, Corporal Russell led his crew in the rescue of several stranded Infantrymen. During subsequent action, Corporal Russell made a hazardous trip to his advance Command Post and while voluntarily returning to the river, a close mortar burst killed him instantly. By his fearless courage, inspiring leadership and devotion to duty, Corporal Russell exemplified the highest traditions of the military service and reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
