The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Henry E. Roeder (ASN: 33130407), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 740th Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 5 April 1945, in Germany. Technician Fifth Grade Roeder exposed himself to intense aimed small arms fire to aid in the evacuation of a wounded officer. In so doing he was painfully wounded in the right army. However, he assisted in the evacuation of the wounded officer to shelter. He then assisted another officer, who was present, in defending the sheltered dugout, by firing with his left arm until the position was overrun by a large number of SS Troopers. The heroic actions and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Roeder reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
